1. The destination
The destination is the Shri Mahakaleshwar temple complex as mapped in OpenStreetMap (way 373720479); the router snaps it to the nearest walkable path. OpenStreetMap does not label the numbered darshan gates reliably, so we do not claim gate-level times. The gate you are assigned and the queue inside the complex can add time.
2. The hotel position
Each hotel's position comes from, in order of preference: OpenStreetMap, the hotel's own website, or the map pin on a booking-site listing. The source is printed on every hotel page. Hotels whose position we could not source show “Not mapped” and are not ranked.
3. The route
We use the OSRM routing engine with its foot profile, as hosted by FOSSGIS at routing.openstreetmap.de, on OpenStreetMap paths. It returns a route, its length and a duration at an average walking pace. We round to whole minutes.
4. The rings on the map
The 5, 10, 15 and 20-minute rings are an isochrone: we asked the same router for the walking time from the temple to a grid of points every 110 m, then drew contour lines. Grid points away from paths get a small penalty for the distance to the nearest path.
5. Facilities
Lift, parking, veg food and 24-hour desk/early check-in are marked ✓ only when the hotel's own site or a booking-site listing states them (link on the hotel page). Otherwise we show “not confirmed” — never a guess.
6. What we do not show
We do not show room prices or star ratings, because we can't verify them for your dates. “Check live price” opens the booking site, which shows today's price. We may earn a commission when you book through these links, at no extra cost to you.
Limits
- Map data can be incomplete, especially narrow lanes around the temple.
- Crowd control, barricades and festival diversions are not in the data.
- Walking pace varies; elders and children may need more time.
The full results are published as an open dataset.
