Book hotels in Ujjain for New Year early, and on refundable terms. In the last week of 2025, Patrika reported that hotels were full, with only a few rooms left and waiting lists, as more than 7 lakh devotees had darshan at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga between 25 and 31 December.
The days around 31 December and 1 January bring lakhs of visitors to Ujjain, most of them heading for Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. This guide turns dated news reports from New Year 2024-25 and 2025-26 into a stay plan: how crowded the city gets, what changed at the temple, which verified hotels are a few minutes' walk from Mahakal, where the district sent cars, and when to book. For the full walk-time ranking, see our list of hotels near Mahakal Temple with walking times.
One caution first. Every arrangement below carries the year it applied to. The Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir Prabandh Samiti, the temple committee, and the district administration set New Year arrangements each season; in 2025 they were reported on 18 December. Nothing here is confirmed for New Year 2026-27, so check the committee's notice for this season before you travel.
Hotels in Ujjain for New Year: the short answer
Do Ujjain hotels sell out at New Year? On the evidence of the last two seasons, rooms near the temple become very hard to find. Patrika's report of 31 December 2025 said hotels were full, with only a few rooms and waiting lists. A year earlier, ETV Bharat reported that about 10 lakh devotees arrived between 31 December 2024 and 1 January 2025, according to the district administration.
Three decisions matter more than which hotel you pick:
- Book early and refundable. Lock a room as soon as your dates are fixed, on terms that let you cancel if the temple's arrangements change your plan.
- Decide whether you will walk or drive. If you will not have a car, a hotel inside the Mahakal walk zone spares you the traffic and diversions. If you will drive, choose by approach road and parking plan, covered below.
- Plan for the whole week, not one night. In 2025 the crowd measures ran from 25 December, and online Bhasma Aarti booking stayed closed until 5 January.
We publish no prices, ratings or availability. Rates for the New Year week move quickly; check them in the where-to-book panel on each hotel page.
How busy Ujjain gets from 25 December to 5 January
Two outlets reporting on two different years give the same picture: lakhs of visitors over a few days, longer darshan times and traffic controls across the city.
New Year 2025-26 in numbers
According to Patrika's report of 31 December 2025, more than 7 lakh devotees had darshan between 25 and 31 December, citing the temple committee. The administration said 1.5 to 2 lakh people were arriving each day. Four-wheeler arrivals roughly doubled, from about 6,000 to about 12,000 a day, and police changed the routing shown on Google Maps to steer traffic. A photo caption in the same report said 10 lakh people were expected over three days. On the same day, the Free Press Journal reported a heavy crowd at Bhasma Aarti, with queues from 4 am, heavy security, and VIP visits expected in the first week of January.
New Year 2024-25 in numbers
ETV Bharat reported on 1 January 2025 that about 10 lakh devotees arrived between 31 December 2024 and 1 January 2025, according to the district administration. A moving Bhasma Aarti arrangement let devotees have darshan in 40 to 45 minutes. More than 700 CCTV cameras and drones were used for monitoring, separate parking was set up for each approach road, and heavy vehicles were diverted away from the city.
| Year | Figure | Who said it | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | More than 7 lakh darshans, 25–31 December | Temple committee | Patrika, 31 Dec 2025 |
| 2025-26 | 1.5–2 lakh arrivals a day | Administration | Patrika, 31 Dec 2025 |
| 2025-26 | Four-wheelers up from about 6,000 to about 12,000 a day | As reported | Patrika, 31 Dec 2025 |
| 2025-26 | Hotels full, a few rooms, waiting lists | As reported | Patrika, 31 Dec 2025 |
| 2025-26 | Bhasma Aarti queues from 4 am on 31 December | As reported | Free Press Journal, 31 Dec 2025 |
| 2024-25 | About 10 lakh devotees, 31 December–1 January | District administration | ETV Bharat, 1 Jan 2025 |
| 2024-25 | Darshan in 40–45 minutes via a moving Bhasma Aarti arrangement | As reported | ETV Bharat, 1 Jan 2025 |
Why plan up to 5 January rather than 1 January? In 2025-26, online Bhasma Aarti booking stayed closed until 5 January and VIP movement was expected in the first week of January. The crowd does not vanish on New Year's Day, so a 2 January checkout will not necessarily be quiet.
What changes at the temple, and what that means for your hotel
The temple committee changes entry rules for the New Year rush. The 2025-26 changes below show the kind of arrangements to expect; the details for 2026-27 may differ.
Bhasma Aarti online booking closures
The Free Press Journal reported on 18 December 2025 that online booking of Bhasma Aarti was blocked from 25 to 31 December, and Patrika reported on 31 December that online booking stayed closed until 5 January. If attending Bhasma Aarti is the reason for your trip, do not book a New Year hotel on the assumption that you will get a slot in this window.
Gate shifts and quick-darshan entry
For 2025-26 the Avantika Gate (Gate No. 1) entry was shifted to near Shehnai Gate, and a ₹250 quick-darshan entry opened at the exit ambulance gate opposite the Bada Ganesh temple, according to the same Free Press Journal report. A hotel described as "near Gate 1" may not be near the entry you actually use, so judge a hotel by its walk time to the temple complex, then check the current gate plan on arrival.
VIP darshan suspended
Patrika reported that VIP protocol darshan was suspended during the 2025-26 rush. If you were counting on a protocol or VIP entry to shorten your day, plan as an ordinary visitor and allow time for queues.
| Date | Change | Source | What it means for your stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Dec 2025 | Online Bhasma Aarti booking blocked 25–31 Dec | Free Press Journal | Don't build your hotel dates around an aarti slot |
| 18 Dec 2025 | Avantika Gate (Gate No. 1) shifted near Shehnai Gate | Free Press Journal | "Near Gate 1" hotel descriptions may not match the entry in use |
| 18 Dec 2025 | ₹250 quick-darshan entry at the exit ambulance gate opposite Bada Ganesh | Free Press Journal | Another entry point to factor in when judging walk times |
| 31 Dec 2025 | VIP protocol darshan suspended | Patrika | Allow for full queue times in your daily plan |
| 31 Dec 2025 | Online Bhasma Aarti booking closed until 5 Jan | Patrika | The busy period runs into the first week of January |
These were the 2025-26 arrangements. Check the temple committee's 2026-27 notice before you book; none of them is confirmed for this season.
Where to sleep if you want to walk to Mahakal
With car arrivals doubling and police rerouting traffic, the simplest New Year stay is one from which you can walk to the temple. In our open walking-time dataset (last checked 13 October 2026), four verified hotels are within about six minutes on foot of the Mahakal temple complex:
- FabHotel Raghumani Palace: about 5 minutes, an approximate estimate from a booking-site map pin.
- Hotel Manthan Palace: about 5 minutes, an approximate estimate from a booking-site map pin.
- Hotel Nandi: about 6 minutes, an approximate estimate from a booking-site map pin.
- Hotel Maheshwari Avenue: about 6 minutes, an approximate estimate from a booking-site map pin.
These minutes are measured to the temple complex on normal days. They do not include queues, barricades or gate shifts, which can add a long way round in the New Year week. The full ranking of every verified hotel by walk time is on the money page linked above, and our guide to hotels by walking distance to the Mahakal gates covers the individual entry gates. We do not say whether any of these hotels has rooms for your dates; check availability in the booking panel.
If you are arriving by train at Ujjain Junction railway station, a walk-zone hotel means you avoid the car diversions completely. If you will reach Ujjain late on 31 December, ask the hotel in writing how late it will hold your room and whether its staff can guide you in when roads near the temple are closed to traffic.
Coming by car: parking lots by approach road
Where do you park at New Year? In 2024-25, according to ETV Bharat, the district set up separate public parking areas by approach road, so where you are coming from decided where your car went. The table shows that plan. Treat it as a guide to how the system worked, not as this season's arrangement.
| Coming from | Four-wheeler lot (2024-25 plan) | Two-wheeler lot (2024-25 plan) |
|---|---|---|
| Indore or Dewas | Karkraj and Bhil Samaj parking | Narsingh Ghat and Harsiddhi Pal |
| Barnagar or Nagda | Mohanpura Bridge to Kartik Mela Ground | |
| Agar | Makodia |
Source: ETV Bharat, 1 January 2025. Heavy vehicles were diverted away from the city in the same plan.
What does this mean for your hotel? If you drive in and stay in the walk zone, you may have to leave the car at an outer lot and walk the rest of the way, depending on that year's plan. We do not list parking for any hotel, because we could not confirm it from two independent sources. Ask the hotel in writing whether it can take your car during the New Year restrictions, and if not, which public lot it suggests. Also expect your usual navigation route to change: in 2025-26 police changed the routing shown on Google Maps. In the 2024-25 plan, riders were sent to the two-wheeler lots at Narsingh Ghat, on the Shipra River, and Harsiddhi Pal.
Booking timeline and checks for the New Year week
When should you book? Earlier than you think. The table ties each step to what happened in 2025-26.
| When | Action | Why (sourced) |
|---|---|---|
| As soon as your dates are fixed | Book a refundable room | Hotels were full with waiting lists by 31 Dec 2025 (Patrika) |
| Mid-December | Read the temple committee's New Year notice; adjust your dates or gate plan | 2025-26 arrangements were reported on 18 Dec 2025 (Free Press Journal) |
| Before 25 December | Reconfirm the booking and arrival time in writing | Restrictions ran from 25 Dec in 2025-26 (Free Press Journal, Patrika) |
| 25 December–5 January | Expect peak crowds and longer darshan | 1.5–2 lakh arrivals a day; online Bhasma Aarti closed to 5 Jan (Patrika) |
| 31 December–1 January | Walk, or park early at your route's lot | About 10 lakh visitors in 2024-25 (ETV Bharat); car arrivals doubled in 2025-26 (Patrika) |
Check the temple committee's 2026-27 notice before you book
Every entry change, booking closure and parking lot on this page belongs to a past season. Before you pay for a room, look for the Shri Mahakaleshwar Mandir Prabandh Samiti's announcement for New Year 2026-27 and the district's traffic plan, and plan around those. If the notice is not out yet, book on terms that let you change your dates.
What should you check in the cancellation policy? Check these before you pay:
- The free-cancellation deadline, and whether it falls before or after the temple usually announces its arrangements.
- Whether the room is held for late arrival on 31 December, and until what time.
- Whether a booking made on an app is confirmed directly with the hotel. Our guide to booking direct vs on an app covers the trade-offs.
- Whether the hotel can be reached by car during New Year diversions, or only on foot.
Planning other peak dates as well? The same logic applies in the monsoon month; see our guide to hotels in Ujjain during Sawan. For New Year, start with the walk-zone list on the Mahakal page and book refundable.
