They rarely show how far each property is from the temple or from Ujjain Junction. • State-run: MPT Ujjaini and MPT Shipra Residency, both about 2.5 km from the temple and 3 km from the station per our profiles.
• Lowest price band: Krishnaalay Guest House, approximately Rs 500-1,500 a night.

Nearby, but not Freeganj

The two MPT hotels near Madhav Club

Madhya Pradesh Tourism (MPT), the state tourism body, runs two hotels in Freeganj. The District Ujjain where-to-stay list gives both as state-owned and places both near Madhav Club, which is the easiest landmark to give an auto driver.

MPT Ujjaini (Hotel Ujjaini)

The district list gives the address as Hotel Ujjaini, University Road, Near Madhav Club, Freeganj. Our own profile for the same hotel describes it as University Road, Beside Madhav Club, Indira Nagar. We use the official district placement in Freeganj and show our profile wording alongside it rather than merging the two. Per our profile, MPT Ujjaini is about 2.5 km from Mahakaleshwar Temple and 3 km from Ujjain Junction, with an approximate band of Rs 1,500-3,500 a night, and it is rated 4.1/5 from 544 reviews on our profile.

MPT Shipra Residency

The district list places Shipra Residency near the Ujjain Dewas Road, near Madhav Club Road, Freeganj. Our profile gives Near Madhav Club, University Road, with the same 2.5 km to the temple and 3 km to the station as Hotel Ujjaini. Its approximate band is Rs 1,500-4,000 a night, and it is rated 4.0/5 from 2,221 reviews on our profile, the largest review count of the two.

Booking an MPT hotel

We do not publish MPT room tariffs, because they change by room type and season and we have no current official tariff to cite. The price bands above are our profile estimates. For the actual rate, check with Madhya Pradesh Tourism or the hotel directly; the district list also carries an official phone number for MPT Ujjaini. If you are choosing between the two, the practical differences are price ceiling and which one has rooms on your dates, since their distances to the temple and station are the same per our profiles.

Why some "Freeganj" search results are elsewhere

When we checked the Cleartrip page for hotels in the Freeganj area of Ujjain, it showed around 13 hotels. Some carry Freeganj addresses, including MPT Shipra Residency and MPT Ujjaini; Hotel Abika Elite is nearby on Nazar Ali Marg. Others are not. Our own profiles place three of the listed hotels on or off Indore Road:

• Anjushree: 72 Goyala Khurd, Indore Road.
• Rudraksh Club & Resorts: near Triveni Sangam, Indore Ujjain Highway.
• Hotel Imperial Grand: near Hari Phatak, Indore Road.

Booking platforms can tag a hotel with a well-known locality name even when its postal address is elsewhere. Those hotels may still be good choices, but if you picked Freeganj for a specific reason, such as being near a relative in Vivekanand Colony or a meeting near University Road, check the full postal address on the listing before you pay. If the address says Indore Road, you are on a different side of the city.

Who Freeganj suits

Freeganj works well if you are in Ujjain for two or more days, travelling with children or older relatives, or need a calmer base between temple visits. It also gives you a genuine choice of price: the profiled hotels run from a Rs 500-1,500 guest house to state-run hotels and a larger private property, all within a few kilometres of the temple. When to stay closer

If your trip is built around Bhasma Aarti, the pre-dawn ritual at Mahakaleshwar Temple, a short journey matters more than a quiet street. Our area guide recommends the temple zone, within about 1-1.5 km, for Bhasma Aarti. From Freeganj you would need transport arranged in advance for a very early start. If you still prefer Freeganj, Solitaire Hotel & Resort is the closest of the profiled hotels at about 1 km per our profile; its address near Jantar Mantar (Vedh Shala) is a useful landmark for drivers. We do not quote auto or e-rickshaw fares, because we have no verified current figures; agree the fare before you set off.

Booking checks for Freeganj hotels

Whichever hotel you choose, a few checks avoid most disappointments:

• Confirm the full address. Look for Freeganj, University Road, Madhav Club or the street names in the table. If the listing says Indore Road, it is not in Freeganj.
• Confirm the price for your dates. Our bands are approximate as of March 2026. Rates can change around festivals and weekends, so ask for the total including taxes.
• Ask about parking if you are driving or arriving by taxi, especially at the larger hotels.
• Ask about early check-in if you arrive on an overnight train; Ujjain Junction is 500 m to 3 km away depending on the hotel.
• Plan pre-dawn transport the evening before if you have a Bhasma Aarti slot, and ask the front desk whether they can arrange it.
• Check the route on a map. Profile distances are a guide; the road distance from your exact building may differ.
