Key takeaways
- Indore Road is Ujjain's highway corridor toward Indore: Hari Phatak, Shivalay, Goyala Khurd and Triveni Naka.
- Listed distances to Mahakal run from approx. 2 km (Hari Phatak end) to about a 10-minute drive (Goyala Khurd), per booking sites.
- Do not confuse it with 'Ujjain Road' in Indore city; check every hotel's map pin.
- Best for drivers, families, event guests and Indore airport arrivals (about 53-57 km); the temple belt suits walk-in darshan.
- No room rates are quoted: booking prices are date-specific snapshots, so confirm rates, parking and cancellation in writing.
Hotels on Indore Road, Ujjain sit on the highway corridor that leaves the city for Indore. They trade temple-lane walkability for more space, easier car access and a few resort-style properties. Listed distances to Mahakaleshwar run from approx. 2 km at the Hari Phatak end to about a 10-minute drive at Goyala Khurd, per booking listings.
Hotels on Indore Road, Ujjain: the short answer
Indore Road is the main road out of Ujjain toward Indore. Inside the city it carries a string of hotels that runs from the Hari Phatak overbridge area, past Shivalay Township and Goyala Khurd, out to Triveni Naka near the Navagraha (Shani) temple on the Shipra River. If you are driving in from Indore, landing at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, or travelling as a family with luggage and a car, staying on this belt usually means less time in old-city traffic on the day you arrive and the day you leave. The catch: you will drive or take an auto to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga rather than walk.
This guide maps the corridor segment by segment, lists the hotels that the district administration and named booking sites place on it, gives every listed distance together with its source, and compares the area with the temple belt and Freeganj. It does not quote room rates. Booking-site prices for this area are date-specific snapshots, and the ones we looked at on 17 October 2026 moved with the travel date and season, so any figure printed here would be stale before you booked. To compare this corridor with stays elsewhere in the city, start from our hub of hotels in Ujjain, then come back here if a car-friendly base on the Indore side suits your trip.
Which Indore Road? Ujjain's corridor vs Indore's "Ujjain Road"
The same highway has two names depending on which end you are standing at. In Ujjain it is Indore Road; in Indore the same route is usually called Ujjain Road. Wikipedia lists the Indore–Ujjain road as SH 27 / NH 552G, and the district website gives the road distance between the two cities as about 53 km. Both cities therefore have hotels on "the Indore–Ujjain road", but only one set of them is in Ujjain.
That causes real confusion in search results. A booking-site locality page titled "Ujjain Road" can be listing hotels in Indore city, a long drive from Mahakal. Going the other way, some "Indore Road, Ujjain" pages pad their lists with hotels from elsewhere in Ujjain. When we checked the top results for this search on 17 October 2026, one travel site's Indore Road page showed a list of hotels that we could not place on the corridor at all, with no distances or map context to help.
The quickest fix is to ignore the locality label and drop the hotel's address on a map. On the correct corridor you should see Ujjain landmarks around the pin: the Hari Phatak overbridge, Shivalay, Goyala Khurd, or Triveni Naka and the Shipra. PIN codes help less than you might hope, because the listings below use both 456001 and 456010 for properties on or beside the road.
The corridor, segment by segment
Read from the city end outward, the corridor falls into four stretches. The distances in the table are the figures that a named booking listing gives for one hotel in that stretch, so treat them as approximate and specific to that property rather than as a measurement for the whole segment.
| Segment | Landmarks | Approx. distance to Mahakal | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hari Phatak end | Hari Phatak overbridge, Hari Phatak Ring Road, Keshav Nagar | approx. 2.0 km (Hotel President, per Hotels.com) | Shortest drive to the temple while staying off the old-city lanes |
| Shivalay Township | Shivalay, Indralaya Highlands | approx. 3.0 km to the Jyotirlinga (Hotel Embassy INN, per Hotels.com) | Families with a car who want a mid-range hotel |
| Goyala Khurd | Pawapuri Colony, 72 Indore Road | about a 10-minute drive (Anjushree, per Trip.com) | Drivers arriving from Indore who want quieter nights |
| Triveni Naka | Triveni Ghat, Navagraha (Shani) Mandir, Shipra River | drive – not confirmed | A resort-style stay at the city edge; Shani temple visits |
Hari Phatak end
The Hari Phatak overbridge is where the corridor meets the city. Hotel President gives its address as Hari Phatak Ring Road, Keshav Nagar, Ujjain 456001, which puts it just off Indore Road rather than on the highway itself. Hotels.com lists it at approx. 2.0 km, about a 3-minute drive, from Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and Travelocity gives approx. 2.1 km. Those drive times assume clear roads; around aarti times and on festival days, allow far longer. The district list also places Hotel Imperial near Hari Phatak on the Ujjain–Indore Road, but we found no independent distance figure for it.
Shivalay Township
Further out, the road passes Shivalay and the Indralaya Highlands area. Hotels.com lists Hotel Embassy INN at Indore Rd, Indralaya Highlands, Shivalay, Ujjain 456010, approx. 3.0 km from Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and approx. 3.4 km from Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple (the listing names both points). Our Hotel Embassy profile covers the property in more detail. At this distance most guests drive or take an auto to the temple; the listing does not support a walking estimate, so neither do we.
Goyala Khurd
By Goyala Khurd the corridor feels more like highway than city. The district administration lists Anjushree at 72 Goyala Khurd, Indore Road, 456010, and Trip.com gives the address as 72 Indore Rd, Goyala Khurd, Pawapuri Colony. Trip.com describes the hotel as within about a 10-minute drive of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, names Vikram Nagar as the nearest station at 4.14 km, and puts Indore airport 52.09 km away. One guest summary on the same page mentions a 30-minute trip, a reminder that traffic, not distance, decides the real time. Read our Anjushree profile before you book.
Triveni Naka and the Shani temple
The outer end of the corridor reaches Triveni Naka, close to the Shipra. The district site describes the Navagraha Mandir as standing on Triveni Ghat, away from the old town, and its Where To Stay list places Meghdoot Resort near Triveni Naka on Indore Road, near the Shani Mandir. We have no confirmed distance from here to Mahakal, so plan on a drive and do not count on walking.
Hotels listed on Indore Road
The table below includes only properties whose address an official or named source places on the corridor or right beside it. The district entries come from District Ujjain's Where To Stay list, which was last updated on 24 May 2019, so use it to confirm an address rather than to judge current quality. The booking-site entries were opened on 17 October 2026.
| Hotel | Address as listed | Approx. distance to Mahakal + source | Our profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel President | Hari Phatak Ring Road, Keshav Nagar, 456001 (just off Indore Road) | approx. 2.0 km (Hotels.com); approx. 2.1 km (Travelocity) | – |
| Hotel Embassy (Embassy INN) | Indore Rd, Indralaya Highlands, Shivalay, 456010 | approx. 3.0 km to the Jyotirlinga, 3.4 km to the temple (Hotels.com) | Hotel Embassy |
| Hotel Tandav | Ujjain – Indore Rd, 456001 | approx. 3.0 km to the Jyotirlinga (Hotels.com) | – |
| Anjushree | 72 Indore Rd, Goyala Khurd, Pawapuri Colony, 456010 | about a 10-minute drive (Trip.com) | Anjushree |
| Meghdoot Resort | Near Triveni Naka, Indore Road, near Shani Mandir | not confirmed – address only (district list) | – |
| Hotel Imperial | Near Hari Phatak, Ujjain–Indore Rd, 456010 | not confirmed – address only (district list) | – |
Some notes on the list. Hotel Tandav's own website describes it as on the Ujjain–Indore Highway with 21 Deluxe rooms and a pure-vegetarian restaurant; the listing does not pin it to a named segment, so check its map pin against the landmarks above. The same district page also lists MPT Ujjaini and Shipra Residency, both government-run MP Tourism (MPSTDC) properties, but their addresses are in Freeganj, not on Indore Road. We have left out properties whose corridor address we could not confirm from a primary listing, and we do not state star ratings, because booking-site stars are not an official classification.
Parking is the question we hear most about this road, and none of the sources above confirms parking arrangements for a specific hotel. Ask each property whether it has covered or open parking, how many cars it can take, and whether a tempo traveller or coach can enter. Ask again if you travel on a festival day, when parking arrangements can change.
Indore Road or the temple belt?
Most visitors to Ujjain choose between three kinds of base: the lanes around the temple, the central Freeganj area, and an outer road such as this one. No single base suits everyone. The right answer depends on how you are arriving, whether you have your own vehicle, and how often you plan to visit Mahakal.
| Factor | Indore Road | Temple belt | Freeganj |
|---|---|---|---|
| Getting to Mahakal | Drive or auto; listed approx. 2–3.4 km at the city end, about a 10-minute drive at Goyala Khurd | Walking distance for most stays | Short drive or auto; check the route for your hotel |
| Arriving from Indore or the airport | On the approach road, so no old-city crossing | Means driving through the busiest part of the city | Depends on the route; check the map |
| Cars and coaches | Wider road; still confirm parking with each hotel | Narrow lanes; vehicle restrictions can apply at peak times | City roads; confirm parking |
| Feel | Highway frontage and a few resort-style properties | Pilgrim bustle from before dawn | Central, with the district-listed MP Tourism properties |
| Best for | Drivers, families, wedding and event guests, airport arrivals | Repeat darshan and bhasma aarti without arranging transport | A central base and government-run options |
Choose Indore Road if you are coming by car from Indore, have a short trip built around a single darshan, or are in town for a wedding or event at a venue on the Indore side. It also suits groups that need a vehicle to stay with them. Choose the temple belt if you plan to attend the bhasma aarti, want to visit Mahakal more than once a day, or simply prefer to walk. Freeganj sits between the two: central, close to the government-run properties on the district list, but without the corridor's car-friendly frontage.
Getting to Mahakal, the station and Indore airport
To Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. From the Hari Phatak end the listed distances are approx. 2–2.1 km, and from Shivalay approx. 3–3.4 km, per Hotels.com and Travelocity. From Goyala Khurd, Trip.com describes about a 10-minute drive. In practice you will take your own car, a taxi or an auto, and on busy days the last stretch near the Shri Mahakal Mahalok corridor can be slow. For the pre-dawn bhasma aarti, fix your transport the evening before and ask the hotel desk whether autos are easy to find at that hour.
To Ujjain Junction. Ujjain Junction is the city's main railway station, on the Western Railway zone. None of the listings we used gives a station distance for the Indore Road hotels, apart from Trip.com naming Vikram Nagar (4.14 km) as the nearest station to Anjushree. If you are arriving by train, check the route from Ujjain Junction to your hotel on a map before you book, and expect to cross the city.
To Indore airport. The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport in Indore. The district site gives about 53 km and Wikipedia about 57 km, so plan on roughly 53–57 km; Trip.com lists 52.09 km from Anjushree. This is where the corridor earns its place: arriving from the airport, you reach these hotels without driving through the old city, and you can leave for an early flight the same way.
During big festivals. Ujjain hosts the Simhastha (Kumbh) every 12 years, and major festivals such as Shravan and Mahashivratri bring heavy crowds. Traffic plans, diversions and parking arrangements change on those dates, so check current local advisories before you rely on any drive time in this guide.
Booking checks for Indore Road hotels
Because listings for this road are so mixed, a few checks before you pay will spare you surprises on arrival:
- Confirm the exact address on a map. Make sure the pin is in Ujjain, near Hari Phatak, Shivalay, Goyala Khurd or Triveni Naka, and not on "Ujjain Road" in Indore.
- Ask about parking in writing. Covered or open, how many vehicles, and whether a coach or tempo traveller can get in.
- Plan pre-dawn transport. For the bhasma aarti, ask whether the hotel can arrange a taxi or whether autos are available on the main road at that hour.
- Check festival dates. Road diversions around Shravan, Mahashivratri and Simhastha can change your route to the temple and where you can park.
- Note the date of any price you see. Booking-site rates are snapshots; screenshot the rate and cancellation terms on the day you book.
- Confirm food and room type. Ask whether the restaurant is vegetarian, and which room category you are actually getting.
If after all this the corridor still looks right, shortlist two or three of the hotels above, check their current listings for your dates, and compare them with temple-side options on the hub. If walking to the temple matters more than parking, the temple belt will probably serve you better.
Frequently asked questions
Is Indore Road a good area to stay in Ujjain?
It suits travellers with a car, families, wedding guests and anyone arriving from Indore or the airport, because the hotels sit on the approach road and avoid old-city traffic. If you want to walk to Mahakaleshwar or attend the bhasma aarti without arranging transport, the temple belt is usually the better choice.
How far is Indore Road from Mahakaleshwar temple?
It depends on the stretch. Hotels.com lists Hotel President at the Hari Phatak end at approx. 2.0 km and Hotel Embassy INN at Shivalay at approx. 3.0 km from the Jyotirlinga. Trip.com describes Anjushree at Goyala Khurd as about a 10-minute drive. Traffic on aarti and festival days can make the trip much longer.
Which hotels on Indore Road have parking?
None of the official or booking listings we used confirms parking for a specific property. Ask each hotel directly whether it has covered or open parking, how many vehicles it can take, and whether coaches can enter, and get the answer in writing.
Can I walk to Mahakal from Indore Road hotels?
From the Goyala Khurd and Triveni Naka stretches, plan on driving; no source we used supports a walking estimate. Even from the city end, listed distances are approx. 2 to 3.4 km, so most guests use a car, taxi or auto.
Is Indore Road convenient for Indore airport arrivals?
Yes, that is its main advantage. Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport is about 53 to 57 km from Ujjain (per the district site and Wikipedia), and the hotels on this corridor are reached without crossing the old city.
